Every two seconds, somewhere in the world, a premature infant is born – the equivalent to about 15 million babies every year.1 Preterm birth, classified as a birth that takes place before 37 completed weeks of gestation,2 is the number one cause of childhood mortality and morbidity.1 Nutrition plays key role in immediate neonatal survival, growth and development, but is also a major factor for long-term health outcomes.3-5 Human milk is the best nutrition for preterm infants; however it is not always available or sufficient to meet their high nutritional needs. Danone Research & Innovation has developed a range of nutritional solutions for preterm infants that have been designed to encourage and support the use of human milk, and thus support breastfeeding.
