Advancing care through tailored nutrition

Disease-related malnutrition

At Danone Research & Innovation, we address disease-related malnutrition through targeted nutritional support. By combining clinical expertise and scientific innovation, we offer solutions that help patients recover, regain strength, and improve their quality of life.

Understanding disease-related malnutrition

Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is a major health challenge worldwide, particularly among older adults, patients with cancer, young children with faltering growth and those in critical care. It results from increased nutritional needs, reduced food intake, or impaired nutrient absorption due to illness. Without adequate nutrition, patients experience muscle loss, immune dysfunction, and delayed recovery. We recognize DRM as a condition that requires early identification and specialized nutritional interventions to prevent further health deterioration.

Form and route of administration as an integral part of patient care

Medical nutrition plays a vital role in the treatment and recovery
of patients affected by DRM. To ensure optimal nutrient delivery,
our solutions come in forms that are easy to digest, enjoyable,
and adapted to each patient’s specific condition.

  • Oral Nutritional Supplements support individuals who have
increased nutritional needs or difficulty maintaining
    adequate intake through regular meals.

  • Tube Feeding delivers complete nutrition directly to the
stomach or small intestine for patients unable to eat orally.

In care units, these types of feeding can be complemented by
Parenteral Nutrition which provides nutrients intravenously for
patients with severe digestive impairments.

Our areas of expertise in disease-related malnutrition

Since malnutrition plays a role in frailty, cancer and critical care interventions, our research and innovation focus on three key areas to address the diverse needs of patients:

  • Preventing malnutrition and frailty: we develop nutritional strategies aimed at preserving, rebuilding or recovering muscle mass during disease and rehabilitation, as well as supporting mobility and reducing the risk of frailty in aging populations.

  • Nutrition for cancer patients:  we aim to have medical nutrition included as an integral part of cancer care and our solutions address the complex nutritional challenges faced by patients, helping to minimize weight loss, maintain muscle mass, and support treatment outcomes.

  • Nutrition for tube-fed patients: our specialized products are designed to meet the elevated nutritional demands of patients in intensive, neuro and critical care, supporting immune function and aiding recovery in the most challenging clinical conditions.

Scientific research driving better patient outcomes

At Danone Research & Innovation, our teams pioneer advancements in gut health, microbiome science, muscle maintenance, and protein innovation. These efforts lead to evidence-based nutritional strategies that improve recovery, help reduce hospital stays, and enhance patients’ quality of life. By collaborating with healthcare professionals worldwide, we ensure our medical nutrition solutions are accessible, effective, and aligned with patient needs across various health conditions.
