Driving innovation in low-carbon, circular packaging solutions to protect both people and the planet through

Sustainable packaging

At Danone, we are determined to play our part by advancing circular economy solutions to reduce our packaging footprint and prevent waste from ending up in nature. We leverage innovative technologies and strategic partnerships to minimize plastic pollution and lower carbon emissions, all while preserving the quality and safety of our foods and drinks.

Designing packaging with sustainability in mind

Our commitment to sustainable packaging is clear: by 2030, we want all our containers to be recyclable, reusable or compostable. As part of our “Danone Impact Journey”, we strive to minimize our reliance on fossil-based virgin plastic, reducing it by 30% by 2030 and by half by 2040.

Innovating through the circular economy

To address the global challenge of plastic pollution, Danone has adopted circular economy models. These include designing recyclable packaging, supporting efficient waste collection systems and reintegrating recycled containers into new packaging production cycles. By 2040, we aim to recover as much plastic as we use, ensuring that no packaging waste ends up in nature. To support this transformation, we are piloting innovative reuse systems, such as Volvic in Germany and Evian/Badoit in France, which ensure that packaging materials are effectively reused and repurposed. Scientific studies show that within 15 years from today, the spread of circular economy solutions could reduce global plastic pollution by 80%. We're proud to be part of this growing movement

Leading edge research & collaboration

At Danone, notably at the Danone R&I packaging center in Evian, France, sustainability is at the heart of every development stage. Our experts create next-generation materials - renewable, biodegradable, plant-based - while
testing formulas suited to food safety needs. Thanks to a global network of 55 R&I subsidiaries, we ensure that these solutions are implemented worldwide. At the same time, by partnering with start-ups, research institutes, packaging innovators and NGOs, we co-develop environmentally-friendly solutions. For example, we actively participate in the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, which advocates systemic change to put an end to plastic pollution and our actions are aligned with the Global Commitment on Plastics led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, further strengthening our role as a global leader in sustainable development.

Rethinking the packaging system

Packaging sustainability is not just a matter of materials, it's also a matter of systems. Danone encourages the development of waste collection processes that align with our circularity objectives. By supporting state-of-the-art collection & recycling systems, we lead the development of effective collection systems to recover as much plastic as we use by 2040. Danone's dedication to sustainable packaging is more than just innovation: it's a commitment to create a healthier planet for future generations. By integrating sustainability throughout the entire packaging chain, we are shaping a future where superior product quality coexists with environmental responsibility.
