The study investigates the role of an altered gut microbiota in CMA infants. The study reports on the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation of a healthy control and a CMA infant in a preclinical model. CMA gut microbiota are characterized by decreased bifidobacterial levels. The presence of a CMA-associated infant gut microbiota was associated with higher clinical scores and immunological parameters of an atopic orientation in the experimental model. While the exact mechanism warrants further research, data suggests that strategies to enrich the gut microbiota of infants with bifidobacteria may play a role in the prevention and dietary management of food allergy.
